When books become movies.

I’m from the Caribbean. Trinidad to be exact. So, when new books are released, it takes probably a month or two to find its way into our local bookstores. About two weeks ago, I visited my local bookstore to see if they had anything new and this is what I saw;

Normally I’d be through-the-roof happy but I was more upset than happy. I mean, yeah I heard of the book because of the movie, but I made a pledge to always read the book before watching its movie. The only problem is that the books aren’t always available to me when I want to read them. Especially if no one has heard of it! So being the book hunter extraordinaire that I am, I searched high and low across the interweb in hopes of getting a copy of ‘Warm Bodies’. Eventually I found one and read it out in a day.

So, imagine my surprise the moment I walked into my local bookstore and I see that staring at me in the face! Where was that when I wanted to read it? Why couldn’t it been on the shelves before the movie? I mean, come oonn! I felt cheated and betrayed. But it doesn’t end there!

Oh no! When I move further into my bookstore, I see this is what I see;

Three best sellers all now ‘a major motion picture’ ! I’m disappointed. Two years ago, when I got my copy of ‘Perks’, no one had even heard of it. Now, a year later, it’s all over the place. The same goes for the ‘Life of Pi’.

It saddens me that these books are out in stores and popular after they’ve had a movie made about them. I knew about all these books before they were even considered to made into a movie. Well, all cept ‘Warm Bodies’.

I probably shouldn’t be as upset as I am, or blowing this out of proportion, it’s just I feel sorry for books like that. They gotta wait to be turned into “major motion” pictures before people discover them and realize how good they are. Most times they just watch the movie without reading the novel.

Sigh…  But, that’s just me. And I’m weird. Lol.

And with that, I end this rant.
